Winnie was born on June 7, 1942 in Amityville, New York. Her parents were Paul and Louise Wrigley. Paul was a NYC Firefighter and Louise was a homemaker. Winnie went to Brentwood High School where she met and fell in love with the love of her life, Horst. Winnie was an avid swimmer and worked as a lifeguard during the summer months along with Horst. She attended the College at Brockport, where she graduated in 1964 with a B.S. in Physical Education. In 1965, Winnie and Horst were married and moved north to Stanfordville in 1967. This is where Horst and Winnie started their family and the World-Famous High Chateau St. Bernard Kennel.
Winnie began teaching at Haviland Junior High School in Hyde Park. She loved teaching archery and cross-country skiing. She had a 30-year teaching career in the Hyde Park District, retiring in 1997. While teaching, Horst and Winnie traveled the country with their award-winning St Bernard’s. Winnie was a Girl Scout Leader, she was the town dog warden, she whelped countless litters of Saint Bernard’s and hand raised them when mothers were unwilling. She enjoyed crocheting and had a passion for reading. She also loved to travel. Whenever Horst and Winnie went on a trip, she drove. Logging countless miles driving their custom blue Chevy Van.
Winnie loved her garden and the hummingbirds that visited it. She would spend several hours watching them compete for flowers. Most of all Winnie loved her family. Winnie would do her best to make all the sporting events. From Little League to High School Sectionals, Winnie would be there cheering her children on. She is survived by her two children, Debbie and Eric (Becky). She was blessed with 6 grandchildren Sarah, Rachel and Matthew Beam, and MacKenna, Callen and Trevor Vogel.
