Virginia Kemp (nee Couse) 81 of Pine Plains, NY passed away on December 30, 2018.

She was born on April 30, 1937 in Pine Plains to the late Grace Knickerbocker Smith and Adrian Couse. Virginia was raised by her loving aunt, the late Rena Knickerbocker.

She was the beloved wife of the late Herbert A Kemp III; loving mother of Melinda, Kevin (Audrey), Michael (Roseann) and the late Herbert A. Kemp IV. Cherished grandmother to Alan, Ryan (Brandi), Kyle (Jamie) and Justin Kemp and great grandmother to Ian, Mason Khloe and Aspen Kemp.

Along with her husband and son she was pre deceased by a sister Mary Evans and a brother Fred Couse. She is survived by two brothers, Robert (Joan) Couse and James Smith, one sister Margaret Smith and long time best friend and sister in law Kathleen Couse along with several nieces and nephews.

Virginia and Herbie were lifelong residents of Pine Plains except for 2 years in Metz, France when Herbie was in the military and 1 year in Maryland while working for IBM. Virginia worked for Dr. and Mrs. Russo for 30 years and continued to work another 25 years for the Pine Plains Central School District.

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Pine Plains and a very active member of the community serving as town council women for several years. Virginia was an accomplished high school cheerleader and most recently donned her H.S. Letter Sweater , given the absence of a cheerleading squad, to cheer on the boy’s high school basketball team. Virginia was instrumental in co-founding the AFS foreign student exchange program while opening her home to many international students.

But most of all, Virginia loved spending time with her family on the beaches of North Carolina, the lakefronts of Vermont or at their home on Bethel Place!

Relative and friends are invited to her Memorial Service on Saturday January 5, 2019 at 11 AM from the First Presbyterian church in Pine Plains with Rev. Jan Brooks officiating.

Private interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Pine Plains.

In lieu of flowers the family requests contributions to the Pine Plains Volunteer Rescue Squad, Pine Plains NY 12567.
