It is with great sorrow that the family of Sam Dawson announces his passing Sunday April 8, 2018. Sam Wilson Dawson Sr was born to Robert J. and Annie Armstrong Dawson in Mt. Vernon New York on March 12 th 1919. Sam was married to Edna (Babe) Dawson for 70 years whom just passed away 4 months ago.
Sam was always involved with his family. He is survived by his daughter Ann (Bill) O Connell, Sandy Dawson (Dave), and son Sam Jr. and Sharon. Also surviving are 7 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. He is predeceased by his parents, 2 brothers, 1 sister and his daughter Betsey Sue. Sam attended a one room school house down the road from the farm and then moved to the Washington Hotel for 2 years before Roe Jan opened from where he graduated in 1939. Sam and Babe operated and owned a dairy farm in North Hillsdale for all of their lives.
Sam took great pride in helping his community and friends. Over the years he was involved in starting the rails to trails in Copake and Hillsdale. He was a member of the Out of School Farmers, a 4H leader and an advisor to the Roe Jan Agricultural Program. He was a bus driver at Roe Jan/ Taconic Hills for 19 years regular running the Green River, Rt. 22, route. He also served on the Taconic Hills School Board for 8 years. He served the town of Hillsdale as town assessor for 14 years, town councilmen for 4 years and as town supervisor for four 2 year terms. He also was chairman of the Columbia County Soil and Water Conservation District for 7 years. He is a lifelong member of the North Hillsdale Methodist Church helping to move the steeple bell from Harlemville to North Hillsdale. Sam is a 70 member of the Hillsdale Fire Department, and had served as president. He also is a mason serving in several positions. Hunting was a hobby and a passion for Sam. Whether he was raccoon hunting with his dogs, turkey hunting with friends, deer hunting locally and on an occasional trips. He also was one of the lucky few to receive a moose permit in Vermont bring home some meat for all to share. Sam also worked and was president of the Hillsdale cattle auction for several years.

Calling hours are Friday April 13 th at Peck and Peck Funeral Home in Copake from 5-7:30 pm.
Funeral services will be held at the North Hillsdale Methodist Church Saturday April 14 th at 11 am.
Interment will follow at the North Hillsdale Cemetery.
A celebration of Sam’s life will follow at the Hillsdale Fire House at 1:00 pm.
