Roger Moody

d. February 27, 2013

Copak - Born in Salisbury, England in 1935, Roger Moody was Beatrice and Harold Moody's second son. He died peacefully and painlessly in the woods of Hillsdale, New York on the night of February 27, 2013 while on his way to dinner with some close new friends.

Roger grew up helping his father in the family's milk company, and met Kerstin - his future Swedish wife of 50 years - while delivering milk. Roger attended a local grammar school, Bishop Wordsworth's, where two teachers and former Kingsmen encouraged his shy but obviously capable mind to apply to Kings College, Cambridge. By the time he became a Kingsman, Roger had a deep knowledge of, and catholic taste in, literature and music which were lifelong passions.

Roger did National Service in East Africa which sparked a lifelong love affair with the continent, and influenced his decision to study anthropology while a Kingsman. Kerstin and Roger were married in 1960 and promptly decamped to Kenya so as Roger could study a tribe on the border of Kenya and Uganda called the Samia for his PhD.

Roger's first daughter, Imogen, was born in Uganda in 1962. On returning to England, Roger and Kerstin lived in Cambridge where they developed their keen interest in gardening and plants and gave birth to their second daughter, Viveka, in 1963. To provide for his young family, Roger pursued a soon-to-be successful career in the then-nascent field of computing which ultimately led to the family's departure for Manhattan in 1967 where their son Mark was born in 1970. The family spent time with close friends on Whipporwhill Road in Hillsdale in the late 70s and early 80s and fell in love with Columbia County. Roger and Kerstin purchased Oakhill Lodge in Copake in 1983 and continued to love its garden and its views even as they moved between London and New York before finally settling in Copake in 2002.

Roger is survived by Imogen who lives in Sydney, Australia, Viveka, who lives in Somerset, England, and Mark, who lives in New York.

Funeral services will be private and at the convenience of the family.
