Phyllis H. Shadic of Copake passed away with her family by her side at Albany Medical Center on July 29th. She was born and grew up in Copake, NY on January 31, 1934 to parents Clayton I. and Hazel (Magley) Hedges. Phyllis was a 1951 graduate of the Roeliff Jansen School and a 1954 graduate from the Union University School of Nursing Albany Hospital, now known as Albany Medical Center in Albany, NY.
In 1955 she married Miller (Midge) Sherwood Shadic who predeceased her in 2002.
Phyllis worked as a Registered Nurse at Eastern Maine General Hospital in Bangor, Maine in 1955 and 1956 while Miller served with the United States Air Force stationed in Bangor. Following the completion of the assignment with the USAF Phyllis and Miller lived for a brief time in Hudson New York before returning to settle in their home town of Copake New York. Phyllis continued her nursing career at Columbia Memorial Hospital in Hudson, NY from 1956 until her retirement in 1996; first as a charge nurse in the Emergency Room, then in Employee Health and then in the Gastroenterology Department until her retirement. After retirement she remained involved with providing private home care.
Phyllis was a charter member of the Copake Fire Company No. 1 Ladies Auxiliary where she actively served for 50 years as an active marcher in parades, fund raisers and providing refreshments to firefighters at fire scenes. She was also a member of the Copake United Methodist Church and then the West Copake Reformed Church where she remained an active member very much enjoying her church family. She was also an active participant in the Alumni of Roeliff Jansen Central School and Union University School of Nursing of Albany. She also enjoyed being an active member of the Roe-Jan Young at Hearters. Phyllis also had a passion for the local theater and volunteered as an usher at the MacHaydn Theater for eleven years, and finally she was also a member of the local Red Hat Society.
Phyllis enjoyed being with family and friends to include many years of camping trips, especially in Vermont, Maine and the Adirondacks.
At the time of her passing, Phyllis had become a resident of the NYS Volunteer Fireman’s Home in Hudson New York.
In addition to her husband Miller, Phyllis was predeceased by her brother and wife, Harold and Dorothy Hedges. She is survived by her son, Randall (Nancy) Shadic of Hillsdale and a nephew, Scott Hedges (Donna) of Copake Falls.
Memorial Services for Phyllis will be held on September 21, 2024 at 11:00 AM from the West Copake Reformed Church, 2692 County Rte 7 Copake, N.Y. 12516. Services will be officiated by
Pastor Rev. Dr. Warren Seibert.
A picnic luncheon reception will follow from
12:30 to 4:00 at the Copake Fire Station, 390 Center Hill Road Copake.
