Leo J. Martel, 92 formerly of Millerton, NY died on Saturday June 5, 2010 at Sharon Hospital in Sharon, CT.
He was born on April 10, 1918 in Mansonville, Quebec, Canada a son of the late Israel and Felixina (Brulotte) Martel.
Leo was the husband of the late Marie A. (Bean) Martel who died on June 5, 1985.
A veteran of World War II, Leo served with the United States Army, 147th Infantry Regiment from May 19, 1943 - January 16, 1946. He was a lifetime member of the Millerton American Legion Post and also a member of the Dover Plains VFW Post.
He was employed as a farmer for many years and in 1969 went to work in the food service department at the Wassaic State School.
Leo had been a Millerton resident from 1969 - 2001 and had lived in Florida and then later Ohio with his companion, Margaret Quigley until returning to the area just recently.
In addition to his wife Marie, he was pre - deceased by a daughter Helen J. (Martel) Slater, three sisters, Leona, Mary and Irene and three grandchildren.
Survivors include three sons, Leo W. Martel of Poughkeepsie, NY, John J. Martel of Falls Village, CT and Frank J. Martel of Millerton, NY; two daughters, Judith M. Drury and Susanna J. Martel both of Millerton, NY. He also leaves a brother Clement Martel of East Hartford, CT and two sisters, Rita Mungeon of Essex Junction, VT and Theresa Julian of Marlbourough, CT. He is also survived by 13 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Leo was also known as "Dad" and "Grandpa" by many others.
His funeral service will be celebrated on Wednesday June 9, 2010 at 12 Noon from the Faith Bible Chapel, 222 Silver Mountain Rd in Millerton, NY with the Rev. William Mayhew, pastor, officiating.
Friends are invited and may call also on Wednesday at the church from 11:00 - 12:00.
Interment with military honors will follow the service in St. Patrick's Cemetery, Church St. in Millerton.
