Stanfordville - Joseph Cornelius Horan Jr., 69, passed away on Thursday, August 4, 2011. He was born on September 17, 1941 in Yonkers New York. He was the son of the late Jane Stottler, whose Dutch family has been residents of New York since 1636, and Joseph Cornelius Horan, a World War I veteran, whose family was from County Cork Ireland.
Joseph attended Cardinal Hayes High School in the Bronx, as well as St. Brendan's Grammar School.
He worked for Citibank for over 35 years and then Charter One Bank for 5 years.
Mr. Horan married Noel Sciarrotta, a former resident of the Bronx.
In addition to his loving wife, Noel, he is survived by a daughter, Maria T. Vondras, and one son, Joseph Cornelius Horan III. He is also survived by a grandson, Elijah Michael Horan, a son-in-law, Matthew W. Vondras, and a daughter-in-law, Robin Schmitt Horan.
He was predeceased many years ago by his siblings; a brother, Thomas, and two sisters, Patricia and Lorraine.
Joseph enjoyed singing. He was a member of St. Joseph's Choir in Millbrook for 10 years and a member of Immaculate Conception's Choir in Bangall for over 20 years. He also served on the Stewardship Council for Immaculate Conception Parish for quite a number of years.
Joseph was an avid gardener and won quite a few ribbons in local community events for the interesting and tasty produce that he grew. He enjoyed reading recipe books and going hunting as well as completing challenging crossword puzzles. He also enjoyed watching murder mysteries and westerns.
He will be deeply missed by all of his immediate family, his very large extended family and his numerous friends.
Calling hours will be held on Sunday, August 7, 2011 from 3 to 6 pm at the Peck and Peck Funeral Home, 7749 S. Main St., Pine Plains.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, August 8, 2011 at 10 am at the Immaculate Conception Church, 623 Hunns Lake Rd., Bangall, NY, Fr. John Bida officiating.
Interment will follow in the St. Mary's Cemetery, Bangall, NY.
