Salisbury, CT - John J. Turbet, 89, a resident of Noble Horizons Nursing Home in Salisbury, CT and formerly of Ancramdale, NY and West Palm Beach, FL, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Saturday, November 9, 2013.
He was born on March 3, 1924 in Queens Village, NY, the son of the late Frank and Elizabeth (Verry) Turbet.
John was a World War II Veteran during the campaigns of the war in Ardennes, Normandy, Northern France, and Rhineland from February 25, 1943 until December 22, 1945. He served as a 4th Grade Surgical Technician at the 168th General Hospital in France, and the 56th General Hospital in Liege, Belgium.
John met his wife of 62 years, Anne (Crowley) Turbet, while working at Morgan Guaranty Trust Co. in NY. She predeceased him on April 3, 2012. He worked there for more than 40 years. After raising his children in Seaford, NY, John and his family lived for a number of years on Fire Island and Oak Beach, NY. He and his wife retired to Ancramdale, NY in 1992, sharing their time between Ancramdale and West Palm Beach, FL.
Past activities included serving as a Meals on Wheels volunteer, being a Knights of Columbus member, as well as a member of the Young at Hearters, and participating in many activities and shows in Ashley/Cresthaven in FL. John enjoyed their many and varied travels, especially their trip to Ireland with the Young at Hearters. He was also an avid reader.
John was a quiet man with an easy personality and a wonderful sense of humor. He had a funny comment or wisecrack for everything. He was a family man and was very proud of all of his children and grandchildren.
He is survived by a son, Gerald Turbet and his wife Wendie of Enfield, CT; a daughter, Christine DePutron and her husband David of Ancramdale, NY; a son Brian Turbet and his wife Sheila of Brooksville, FL; a daughter, Maureen McMullan and her husband James of Red Bank, NJ; grandchildren Ryan Turbet, Jenna (DePutron) Tramontana and her husband John, Shane DePutron and his wife Allison, Scott DePutron, Daniel Turbet and his wife Rachel, Kerry Turbet, James, Bridget, Katie, and Mary McMullan; and several nieces.
He was also predeceased by his brother Frank Turbet, his sister Grace (Turbet) Abbate, and his grandson, Brandon Turbet.
Calling hours will be held from 4 PM to 7 PM on Friday, November 15, 2013 at the Peck and Peck Funeral Home, 8063 State Route 22, Copake, NY 12516.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 AM on Saturday, November 16, 2013 at Our Lady of Hope Roman Catholic Church, 8074 State Route 22, Copake Falls, NY 12517 with Rev. George Brennan officiating.
Burial will follow in St. Bridget's Cemetery in Copake Falls, NY, located next to the church.
