James W. Elvin, Sr

Stanfordville - James W. Elvin, Sr., 74, a forty three year resident of Stanfordville, NY, passed away on Wednesday, November 28, 2012 at Vassar Hospital in Poughkeepsie, NY after a brief illness.

He was born on October 31, 1938 in Washington Heights, NY, the son of the late John Y. and Catherine (Kehoe) Elvin.

Mr. Elvin honorably served in the United States Air Force from 1952 until 1956.

James worked for Republic Aviation and Grumman Aerospace Corporation in Long Island, and IBM in Kingston during the 1960's. He then joined his father and took over the family business, Elvin's Family Market in Stanfordville, which is entering its 48th year. Elvin's Family Market is currently run by his son, James W. Elvin, Jr.

He was a civil war enthusiast, loved motorboats and enjoyed painting. James was also a contributor to many local charities. He adored classic cars. James particularly loved Mustangs and T-Birds, and was a horse racing aficionado. He is survived by his three children, Sharon Elvin of Hyde Park, NY; Jamie O'Neil of Rhinebeck, NY; and James W. Elvin Jr. and his wife Tory Garcia of Clinton Corners, NY; two grandchildren, James Joseph and Maddisen Rose Elvin of Clinton Corners, NY; four sisters, Beth Mattingly of MD; Kathie Elvin-Yale of New York, NY; Patty McNamara-Wheelock of Slingerlands, NY; and Margaret Elvin of Delmar, NY; as well as several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, John Y. Elvin, Jr.

Calling hours will be held from 1 to 3 and 6 to 8 PM on Sunday, December 2, 2012 at the Peck and Peck Funeral Home, 7749 S. Main St., Pine Plains, NY 12567.

Funeral services and interment will be private.
