Pine Plains, NY - Herbert A. Kemp III, 75, passed away on Sunday, February 28, 2010 at Noble Horizons in Salisbury, CT after a long illness with his loving family by his side.
He will be forever missed by his adoring family, friends and church family.
He was born on October 16, 1934 in Poughkeepsie, NY the son of the late Herbert and Ethel M. (Schmidt) Kemp Jr.
He was a graduate of the former Stanford Union School as well as Pine Plains Central were he played football and baseball. After graduation he enlisted in the United States Army from January 1955 to December 1958. Serving in New Jersey, Fort Benning, GA, Fort Eustis, Virginia and Calin Casernes in Metz, France.
Herb was a Star Eagle Scout. He was very active in his church at a very young age in Stanford. He was a fifty year member of the Pine Plains First Presbyterian Church, where he taught Sunday School, was a Deacon, Elder and served as treasurer for forty years.
He was a founding member of the Pine Plains Rescue Squad and was an active fireman for the Pine Plains Hose Company for many years. He was active in the Pine Plains Recreation Department, forming and coaching minor league teams. He also served as Recreation Director and was a twenty year member of the Pine Plains Police Department.
Herb was elected to the Town of Pine Plains Board of Assessors and served for twenty plus years.
After serving in the Army, Herb was employed by the Wallace Company in Poughkeepsie, NY as a drapery technician. He installed drapes in the Roosevelt Estate and Vanderbelt Mansion. After leaving the Wallace Company he was employed as a micro-chip processor for IBM for thirty two years. He retired in 1992. After retirement, he was employed at the Pine Plains Central School District.
Herb was a loving husband, dedicated father, grandfather and great grandfather.
On April 17, 1955 at the First Presyterian Church in Pine Plains, NY he married Virginia (Couse) Kemp. She survives him at home.
In addition to his loving wife Virginia, survivors include a daughter, Melinda of Buffalo, NY; two sons, Keven and his wife Audrey Kemp of Pine Plains, NY; Mike and his wife Roseann Kemp of Gallatin, NY; four grandsons, Alan, Ryan, Kyle, Justin a great grandson Ian Scott and many nieces and nephews.
Mr. Kemp was predeceased by a son, Herbert A. Kemp IV, a brother, John Kemp and a sister, Marie E. Dykeman.
Calling hours are from 3 to 7 pm on Friday, March 5, 2010 at the Peck & Peck Funeral Home South Main St. Pine Plains, NY.
Funeral services are 11 am on Saturday, March 6, at the First United Presbyterian Church in Pine Plains, NY with Rev. Carol Miller officiating.
Interment will follow in the Evergreen Cemetery Pine Plains, NY.
