Hazeletta Vreeland died peacefully at her home in Copake, NY on Friday February 18, 2011. She was 90 years old.
She was born Hazeletta Florence Patton in Yonkers, NY on January 16, 1921.
She attended Yonkers Public Schools and graduated from Roosevelt High School in Yonkers.
Hazeletta married William Clark Vreeland in 1940. They were together for 65 years until his death in 2005.
During World War II Hazeletta worked for the US Army Signal Corps while her husband fought in the South Pacific. Later she worked as an administrator for the Board of Education in Yonkers. Hazel had two children, Thomas Sherman and Donna Louise. When she and Bill came to Copake in the 1980's she was a realtor and ran an antique shop in Hillsdale, NY.
A lifelong poet, Hazeletta was published and won numerous awards and prizes. An avid collector of antiques she specialized in American Art Pottery.
She is survived by her son Thomas of Hillsdale NY, two grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
A private graveside service will be held Wednesday at the Hillsdale Rural Cemetery with the Rev. John Thompson of the Church of St. John in the Wilderness in Copake Falls, NY officiating.
