Evelyn S. Day

d. August 24, 2014

Millerton, NY - Evelyn S. Day, 84, beloved wife of Rev. Herbert G. Day Jr. and cherished mother of three daughters and a son, died in her sleep at St. Francis Hospital, Hartford, CT., on August 24, 2014.

Evelyn was born in Canaan, CT., to Lois and Ennis Silvernale. She grew up in Millerton and attended elementary and high school in the Webutuck Central School District, where she graduated in 1947. After working for three years, Evelyn attended the St. Frances Hospital Nursing Program, graduating in June 1953. For forty years, caring for others was at the core of Evelyn's character and work as a registered nurse for Sharon Hospital, Sharon, CT., Wassaic Developmental Center, Wassaic, NY, Crouse Irving Hospital, Syracuse, NY, and Clifton Springs Hospital, Clifton Springs, NY.

While in nursing school Evelyn met her future husband, Herbert G. Day Jr., of Arlington, NY. Herbert and Evelyn were married July 12th, 1953, at United Methodist Church, Millerton, NY. They built a home and settled in Millerton, and later Clifton Springs, NY, where they raised their four children, Mary Elizabeth, Gilbert, Sally, and Nan Ellen. In retirement, they had a vacation home on Lake Ontario near Pulaski, NY. They loved walking with their dogs to watch the sunsets and sharing the beach with their family.

Evelyn is survived by her husband, Herbert, of Millerton, her daughters, Mary Thompson of Sharon, CT., Sally Hart of Catskill, NY, Nan Herow of Millerton, NY, and her son, Gilbert Day of Millerton, eleven grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren. Her love for family, cooking, and gardening will always be remembered. Evelyn especially enjoyed singing and sharing music, especially with her children, grandchildren and the children at church. On sunny summer days, before she gave up driving Evelyn loved to go for drives with the windows open and the radio turned up loud.

A celebration of Evelyn's life will be held Friday, August 29th, at 4 pm at the First United Presbyterian Church, Main Street, Pine Plains, NY. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Pine Plains Food Pantry, PO Box 515, Pine Plains, NY 12567 or the First United Presbyterian Church Youth Music Ministry, PO Box 313, Pine Plains, NY 12567.
