Donald Delamater, 79 of Copake passed away on Wednesday August 7, 2013 with his family by his bedside at Vassar Brothers Hospital in Poughkeepsie, NY.
He was born November 22, 1933 in Hillsdale to the late Douglas B. and Cecile (Burdick) Delamater.
Don grew up on the family's Yonderview Road dairy farm and then moved on to the field of agricultural mechanics working for local farm equipment dealers, In the early 70's, Don was employed by the Lane Construction Corp. as a blacktop plant operator in Sheffield, MA, later becoming the plant manager of the Sheffield, Lenox and Pittsfield plants. His passion for agriculture brought him back to farming with Sir William Angus of Hillsdale and Claverack. After several years, Don began his own lawn and landscape business that he worked at right up to the time of his passing.
Don was a member of the Hudson Valley Old Time Power Assoc. and was also a member of the Roe Jan Antique Tractor Pullers where he was an active participant for many years. As a former member of the Oxbow Club in Hillsdale, deer hunting was another passion of Don's and he was well known for his landmark hunting stand, "Donnie's milk crate".
Don is survived by his loving wife, Joanne of Copake. His children, Bobby (Susan) Delamater of Hillsdale, John Delamater of Livingston, Dave (Diane) Delamater of Claverack, Don (Holly) Delamater Jr. of Harleysville, PA, JoAnn Pilkington of Hillsdale and Stephanie (Devin) Poucher of Copake. Also his stepchildren, Donald Taft of Philmont, Andrew Taft of Pine Plains, Christina Duarte of Theresa and Brandi (Wayne) Roberts of Hillsdale along with several grandchildren and one great grandaughter. Also surviving is a brother, Harold (Edie) DeLaMater of Wildwood, FL and two sisters, Carolyn Burlarley of Valdosta, GA and Leona (Don) DeLong of Castleton, NY plus several nieces and nephews.
Don was pre deceased by his wife of a previous marriage, Eleanor Feger Delamater and a son, James Delamater.
A public Celebration of Life will be held on at the Hillsdale Fire Company Sunday September 15, 2013 at 2 PM.
