Diane Shadic, of Copake, passed away peacefully with her family by her side on June 9, 2024 at Albany Medical Center after a brief illness. She was born in Mt Vernon, New York on September 13, 1939 to parents Anthony LaPorta Jr. and Vincenza Vigilotti LaPorta. Diane grew up in Tuckahoe, New York and her family frequently vacationed in Copake Falls, eventually moving to Copake in 1955. At the age of 16, she met the love of her life in Copake, Donald C. Shadic. They were married on September 10, 1959.
In 1962, they moved into the new house they built on Center Hill Rd, Copake where they raised their 3 children and in 1968 opened up the town clerk's office in their basement, where Diane served as deputy clerk for the next 18 years. She was also the owner of Diane’s Village Square Restaurant in Hillsdale. Diane enjoyed working as a teacher’s aide for many years at Roe Jan and Taconic Hills Central schools, as well as for Mt. Everett Regional School. In her later years you could see Diane alongside her husband at the local markets where they sold their hand-made Adirondack furniture.
Diane and Don spent their summers in Copake and winters in The Villages, Florida. She was active in her church and volunteered in the gift shop. She also enjoyed shuffleboard and golfing. Diane loved going to nightly Music on the Square with her husband when in Florida. Diane was also a 50 plus year member of the Copake Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary.
Diane is survived by her husband, Donald C. Shadic, of Hillsdale. Their 3 children; daughters Donna Smith of Wesley Chapel, FL and Anne (Howard) Candee of Great Barrington, MA and son Michael (Michelle) Shadic of Claverack, NY; 2 brothers, Anthony (Jan) LaPorta III of South Daytona, FL and Robert (Jeane) LaPorta of Bonita Springs FL and predeceased by brother Joseph LaPorta of Copake; seven grandchildren; Matthew (Alexa) Shadic, Kristle, Elizabeth, and Tasha Candee, Luc, Kalen, and Dalton Smith and great-granddaughters, Kylee Archey and Kaulder Rivenburg. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Charlene LaPorta of Copake.
A time for sharing memories and offering condolences will be on Friday evening, June 14th from 5:00 to 7:00pm at Peck & Peck Funeral Homes, 8063 Route 22, Copake. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday at 10:00am from St. Peter’s Church, Great Barrington. Interment will follow in St. Peter’s Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her name to St. Peters Church, 16 Russell Street, Great Barrington, MA 01230.
