Deacon Martin F.J. Stosiek, 86 of Hillsdale, NY passed away on Wednesday May 14, 2014 at Albany Medical Center.
He was born on July 25, 1927 in Germany the son of Franz and Ida (Maciejek) Stosiek.
Along with his wife Gertraud he owned and operated Berkshire Pottery in Hillsdale.
Deacon Stosiek was ordained on June 19, 1976 at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Albany, NY. He served at St. Bridget's Roman Catholic Church in Copake Falls, NY, now the Parish of Our Lady of Hope. While there he was instrumental in starting many programs including the Human Developmental Fund, the Tri Town Community Loan Fund and the Christmas Food Basket Program for those in need. He also initiated the senior lunch program at the church which was later expanded to include all of Columbia County.
Appointed by then Bishop Howard Hubbard, he served on the Diocesan Rural Life Commission and the Peace and Justice Commission.
Survivors include his wife, Gertraud (Nieter) Stosiek of Hillsdale; five children, Martin Stosiek Jr. of Hillsdale, Michael Stosiek of Lake Placid, Christina Stosiek of Germany, Christopher Stosiek of Hillsdale and Erika Radice of Hillsdale. He also leaves eleven grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday May 19, 2014 at 11 AM from the Parish of Our Lady of Hope, 8074 State Route 22 in Copake Falls, NY.
Friends are invited and may call on Sunday May 18, 2014 from 4:00 - 6:00 PM at the Peck and Peck Funeral Home, 8063 State Route 22 in Copake Falls, NY.
Interment will be in New St. Bridget's Cemetery.
